The National Institute of Medical Science and Nutrition Salvador Zubiran (INCMNSZ) is one of the National Institutes of Health under the Ministry of Health in Mexico. It is one of Mexico’s most prestigious medical and scientific assistance institutions.

It was inaugurated on October 12, 1946, under the name of Hospital of Nutrition Diseases. To extend its their functions into other fields, in 1978 the name was changed to the National Institute of Nutrition Salvador Zubiran, which was used until June 2000 when it was given its current name. The founder and first Director was D Salvador Zubiran, who led the Institution until 1980. The current Director is Dr. David Kershenobich Stalnikowitz.

Since its inception, the Institute was planned as a model of medical care, where that the activities serve as the basis for education and research. It is based on the premise that you can only give good care in an academic setting conducive to teaching and scientific research.

The initial objectives were met at length and, in its more than 60 years of existence, the number of medical departments grew from 3 to over 40, covering almost all specialties in medicine.

From the standpoint of care, it provides 167 beds for in-patient care, and a broad external consultation that serves 150,000 patients a year, with an average of 249,000 annual consultations. Through physicians and nurses with the highest academic standards, as well as laboratory equipment and the most modern diagnostic aids, it serves patients with a wide range of ailments.

The Department of Medicine and the Department of Surgery are responsible for the welfare activity in the Institution. There are 213 physicians, all with several years of training in the country or abroad.

Also, the Institute has its own school of nursing, with the highest quality standards for healthcare.
Furthermore, the INCMNSZ’s multidisciplinary facilities oriented to global health (animal certified facilities, research laboratories, and clinical areas), have updated medical equipment, a first class central lab, and specialized health workers. The Institute is looking for actions and mechanisms to contain the demand for patients through new strategies to improve patient flow and strengthen controls.

Assets in Clinical Services

Most of the patients have chronic degenerative diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, liver fibrosis and cirrhosis, cancer, kidney failure, and HIV/AIDS, among others; after diagnosis they require continuous attention. In order to maintain their diseases controlled, and offer them a better quality of life, the Institute has developed a series of surveillance programs for chronic diseases.

Outpatient services most requested by patients are: internal medicine, diabetes, gastroenterology, rheumatology, hematology, thyroid, urology, dermatology, oncology, otolaryngology, and neurology.

The major causes of hospital admissions are: leukemia, digestive system diseases, pneumonia, liver & biliary tract diseases, diseases of the urinary system, and systemic connective tissue disorders. The occupancy rate in 2011 was 92.2%, and the average length of stay was 10.6 days.

Assets in Research

As the largest center for medical training and research in Mexico, the INCMNSZ has 163 researchers working in 42 knowledge lines.  During 2011, 382 scientific papers in index journals were published.  This is a result of a successful union of creativity, scientific productivity, and care.

Its performance in front of scientific societies is also quite prominent. It is the medical institution with the most researchers and scientific production in the country, having also the highest rate of impact. This activity is coordinated by the Direction of Research of the departments that depend on basic research and medical research.

As an example of success in this field, we can mention that three of its members joined the National College and eleven have won the National Award of Science.

Assets in Medical Education

Through the Department of Education, it now offers 22 postgraduate courses endorsed by the National Autonomous University of Mexico. The INCMNSZ has the top 10% of residents in the country, who are chosen by CV and personal interviews.

Graduates of the educational system are distributed throughout the country, and are leaders of academic medicine nationally, occupying senior positions in universities and teaching hospitals.
