The National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition Salvador Zubirán (INCMNSZ, INNSZ) is one of the National Institutes of Health under the Ministry of Health. It is one of the most prestigious medical institutions and scientific assistance from Mexico.
It was inaugurated on October 12, 1946 under the name of Hospital of Diseases of Nutrition. To extend their functions into other fields, in 1978 it changed the name to the National Institute of Nutrition Salvador Zubirán that was used until June 2000, when he was given the present name. Its founder and first director was Dr. Salvador Zubirán who led the institution until 1980. The current Director is Dr. Fernando Gabilondo Navarro.
Since its inception, the Institute was planned as a medical model of care that the activities serve as a basis for educational and research, thinking that you can only give good care in an academic setting conducive to teaching and scientific research.
The initial objectives were met at length and in its more than 50 years of existence, the number of medical departments grew from 3 to over 40 covering almost all specialties in medicine.
From the standpoint of care, provides 167 beds for inpatient care of patients and a broad external consultation that serves 135,000 patients a year with an average of 215,000 annual consultations. Will serve patients with a wide range of ailments and provides laboratory equipment cabinet and most modern diagnostic aids.
Its personal physician is 176 specialists, all with several years of training in the country or abroad. They are the Department of Medicine and the Department of Surgery who are responsible for the welfare activity in the institution.
The Institute, through its Department of Education, now offers 20 postgraduate courses endorsed by the National Autonomous University of Mexico, which are specialists in different fields of medicine and surgery. Graduates of the educational system are distributed throughout the country and are leaders of academic medicine nationally, to occupy senior positions in universities and teaching hospitals.
Its performance in front of scientific societies is also quite prominently. It is the medical institution with more researchers and more scientific production in the country, being also the highest rate of impact. This activity is coordinated by the Direction of Research of the departments that depend on basic research and medical research.
As an example of success in this field, we can mention that three of its members joined the National College and seven have won the National Award of Science.
